True Crime | True Crime Podcasts on Youtube | True Crime Documentary In this episode of True Crime Legacy, I will talk about Frank McErlane Francis "Frank" McErlane was a Chicago gangster and second-in-command of the Saltis-McErlane Gang in the 1930s, working with Joseph Saltis in the Chicago Beer Wars. He was the one who introduced the Tommy Gun to Chicago, and was known to be a brutal hitman. McErlane was born in Chicago to an Irish-American Catholic family, with McErlane carrying a Rosary in his breast pocket. McErlane became the second-in-command to Joe Saltis, a Hungarian gangster who founded the Saltis-McErlane Gang with him, creating a powerful bootlegging empire. Frank was known to always be drinking alcohol, his face getting redder each drink. His image was that of a "butter and egg" man, and was very violent. He was responsible for the murders of George Bucher and George Meegan on September 17, 1923, and escaped responsibility, but was later arrested for different crimes. In his next murder in 1924, he used the Tommy Gun for the first time; these weapons were procured from Dion O'Banion's shipment that reached Chicago after he died, and he used it in a failed attempt to kill Spike O'Donnell, who was talking with a beat cop. In 1931, he retired after shooting his wife and some "yapping" dogs in a drunken stupor and retired, dying of pneumonia in 1932. ⏳𝐕𝐈𝐃𝐄𝐎 𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐏𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐒 ⏳ 00:00 – Intro 01:18 – Life Update 11:30 – Frank McErlane early days 13:28 – Life after prison 42:38 – Sept 7, 1923 46:56 – The “One Way Ride” 48:27 – Thaddeus S Fancher 52:19 – John “Mitters” Foley 52:49 – Vincent McErlane, the traitor 58:07 - McErlane’s CRAZY hospital stay 01:03:11 – Imaginary fight with REAL bullets 01:06:15 – Retirement Fund & McErlane’s luxurious, lonely end 🍁 𝐀𝐁𝐎𝐔𝐓 𝐃𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐚 🍁 Your source for the life and history of infamous gangsters ... and some other stuff, too. • "Mad Sam" Destefa...
In the 1960s, Samuel “Mad Sam” DeStefano was one of the most vicious loan sharks in Chicago. He worked closely with the mob, brutally torturing anyone who failed to pay him back on time. However, DeStefano was never an official mob member himself — because he was too unhinged even for America’s most vicious gangsters. Throughout his blood-soaked career, Mad Sam DeStefano was well-known for his violent antics. He even reportedly had a torture chamber in his sound-proofed basement along with a collection of tools with which he maimed his victims. His favorite was an ice pick. Though DeStefano brought in plenty of money for the Chicago Outfit, he was also considered a liability due to his unpredictable antics. When he and two other mobsters were put on trial for murder in 1973, his co-defendants knew they didn’t have a chance with Mad Sam on the stand — so they decided to take him out.

Domenic "Mick" Gatto (born 6 August 1955) is a professional mediator within the Victorian building industry; and a debt collector. Gatto was named as a standover man during the Royal Commission into the Building and Construction Industry. A veteran of Melbourne's underworld, Mick Gatto is one of the few survivors of Melbourne's Gangland Wars. Many of the victims were his long-time friends. Today the former heavyweight boxer runs Elite Cranes, a crane company that employs about sixty people, and Arbitrations and Mediations Pty Ltd., among others. The son of two Italian immigrants from Calabria, Gatto was raised in Melbourne and commenced working in the fruit and vegetable industry. A former boxer, in the 1980s and 1990s, Gatto was involved in Melbourne's illegal gambling scene. In 2004 Gatto was given a ten-year gaming ban, subsequently increased to a life ban. In 2004 Gatto was charged with the murder of Andrew Veniamin, a suspected underworld hitman. Gatto was remanded in custody for 18 months. He was found not guilty at trial, during which Gatto claimed he had acted in self-defense after Veniamin pulled out a .38 and threatened to kill him. Gatto claimed that during a struggle he was able to turn the gun around on Veniamin and fire one shot into his neck, and one shot in the eye. He also claimed that during the argument, Veniamin had implicated himself in the deaths of Dino Dibra, Paul Kallipolitis and Graham Kinniburgh. At the time of charging Vince Benvenuto with the 2002 murder of Victor Peirce, it was alleged that Gatto had links to both men and to Faruk Orman, the man later convicted of Peirce's murder and acquitted in 2019. No charges were laid against Gatto.

Benjamin 'Lefty' Ruggiero and Donny Brasco's friendship IN REAL LIFE | ( 2023) Benjamin Ruggiero was a mobster or ‘soldato’ hailing from the Bonnano crime family. The Bonnano crime family is one of the five families that dominate organized crime in the United States, particularly in New York City. Ruggiero served as a soldato, the first level in the hierarchy of the American as well as the Sicilian Mafia. He was also known by the names of ‘Lefty two Guns’ or ‘Lefty Guns’. The name ‘Lefty’ came from him using only his left hand to throw dice and the term ‘Two guns’ was used because he was known to always carry two guns with him. As a soldato for the Bonnano family, Ruggiero was prolific in crimes such as illegal bookmaking, extortion, and loan sharking. He is also alleged to have murdered around twenty-six people in his lifetime, though some estimate it was over thirty. In the late 1970s, Ruggiero rose to become a ‘made-man’, which is a term or title in the American Mafia to signify a fully initiated member of a particular crime family. Ruggiero took his oath of ‘Omerta,’ which is the mafia code of silence, and did not break it even after his arrest years later. The mobster was also known for his close friendship with and mentorship of FBI Agent Joseph Pistone who worked undercover as ‘Donnie Brasco’. Their exploits were portrayed in the 1997 film ‘Donnie Brasco’ staring Al Pacino as Ruggiero and Johnny Depp as Joseph Pistone aka Donnie Brasco. ⏳𝐕𝐈𝐃𝐄𝐎 𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐏𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐒 ⏳ 00:00: Intro 07:36: Benjamin Lefty Ruggiero growing up 15:30: Early days of crime 29:27: Family Affairs 33:20: The Abscam Scandal 36:45: Gambling, racketeering, and bookmaking 🍁 𝐀𝐁𝐎𝐔𝐓 𝐃𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐚 🍁 Your source for the life and history of infamous gangsters ... and some other stuff, too. “Queenie,” “Madam Queen,” “Madam St. Clair,” “Queen of the Policy Rackets” – whichever of the many nicknames you know her by, Stephanie St. Clair is one of the most formidable mobsters of the 20th century. St. Clair spent her criminal career rubbing elbows with New York’s famous figures, from leading civil rights activists to the fearsome heads of the mafia’s Five Families. With the “Godfather of Harlem,” Bumpy Johnson, as her hired security, Stephanie St. Clair was an imposing presence on the New York underground gambling scene. Yet, her devotion to uplifting Black Harlemites through activism and education earned the respect and admiration of her peers. She was known around Harlem for many things, her frequent (and often entertaining) newspaper ads being one of them. However, it was her steadfast resolve in standing up to corrupt police officers and rival racketeers like Dutch Schultz that ultimately remains St. Clair’s biggest legacy. ⏳𝐕𝐈𝐃𝐄𝐎 𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐏𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐒 ⏳ 00:00 – Intro 04:14 – Stephanie's early years 12:58 – Boyfriend: Duke 16:07 – Boyfriend: Ed 29:38 – Her first arrest 32:12 – Prohibition ends 33:02 – Who is Dutch Shultz? 41:31 – Dutch Shultz v Stephanie St Clair for control of Harlem 47:13 – Stephanie’s marriage 49:41 – Life after her final prison sentence 🍁 𝐀𝐁𝐎𝐔𝐓 𝐃𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐚 🍁 Your source for the life and history of infamous gangsters ... and some other stuff, too. 🌟Stefano "The Undertaker" Magaddino was an Italian-born crime boss of the Buffalo crime family in western New York. His underworld influence stretched from Ohio to Southern Ontario and as far east as Montreal, Quebec. Known as Don Stefano to his friends and The Undertaker to others, he was also a charter member of the American Mafia's ruling council, The Commission. Magaddino was born on October 10, 1891, in Castellammare del Golfo, Sicily. In Castellammare del Golfo, Magaddino led a clan allied with Giuseppe "Peppe" Bonanno and his older brother and advisor, Stefano. In August 1921, a barber named Bartolo Fontana turned himself into the New York police, confessing to murdering Camillo Caiozzo a couple of weeks earlier in Avon, New Jersey. Fontana claimed he murdered Caiozzo at the behest of the "Good Killers", a group of mafiosi who hailed from Castellammare del Golfo, in retaliation for Caiozzo's involvement in the 1916 murder of Magaddino's brother, Pietro, back in Sicily. Although he operated a legitimate funeral home business in Niagara Falls, New York, the Magaddino Memorial Chapel, with Prohibition in effect in the United States, Maggadino made his real money running a profitable bootlegging business by smuggling wine and spirits across the Niagara River into New York State, thereby supplying the needs of speakeasies located in Buffalo and the very "Honky-tonk" Niagara Falls. After Prohibition ended, Magaddino and his crime family made their money by means of loan sharking, illegal gambling, extortion, carjacking and labor racketeering as well as other legitimate lucrative businesses such as linen service businesses that served the needs of most of the hotels located throughout the region. ⏳𝐕𝐈𝐃𝐄𝐎 𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐏𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐒 ⏳ 00:00 – Intro 05:57 – End of Intro, Stefano Magaddino’s early years 12:23 – The Good Killers 13:47 – The Caiozzo Murder 22:15 – Magaddino heads for Buffalo 33:58 - Magaddino’s role in the Castellammarese War 39:06 – Putting together the Commission 40:53 – The loss of Archangela 45:29 – The Magaddino Family 1:01:39 – The beginning of the end of Magaddino 1:05:50 – Stefano Magaddino’s death 🍁 𝐀𝐁𝐎𝐔𝐓 𝐃𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐚 🍁 Your source for the life and history of infamous gangsters ... and some other stuff, too. Joe Masseria, byname Joe The Boss, original name Giuseppe Masseria, (born c. 1887, Italy—died April 15, 1931, New York, N.Y., U.S.), leading crime boss of New York City from the early 1920s until his murder in 1931. Emigrating from Sicily at age 16, Masseria associated with a band of Italian killers and Black Hand extortionists and committed burglaries and other petty crimes, but in 1920 he began to create the power that gave him control or a percentage of the profits of most of the Italian-run rackets in New York. In 1930 he declared war on Salvatore Maranzano (q.v.) and allied rivals, and some 60 gunmen and leaders on both sides were slaughtered in the resultant gang war. It ended on a Wednesday afternoon in April 1931, when Masseria was himself shot down by his own men while sitting in a Coney Island restaurant called Scarpato’s Nuova Villa Tammaro. The assassins were Vito Genovese, Albert Anastasia, Joe Adonis, and Bugsy Siegel, led by Lucky Luciano. ⏳𝐕𝐈𝐃𝐄𝐎 𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐏𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐒 ⏳ 00:00 - Intro 01:21 - Masseria's early days 10:23 - The fall of the Morello family 36:34 - The end of D'Aquila 45:12 - Masseria's reign as Capo di tutti Capi 1:02:05 - The beginning of the end of Masseria 🍁 𝐀𝐁𝐎𝐔𝐓 𝐃𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐚 🍁 Your source for the life and history of infamous gangsters ... and some other stuff, too. 🌟Born of an immigrant family in Brooklyn, New York in January 1899, Al Capone quit school after the sixth grade and associated with a notorious street gang, becoming accepted as a member. Johnny Torrio was the street gang leader and among the other members was Lucky Luciano, who would later attain his own notoriety. About 1920, at Torrio’s invitation, Capone joined Torrio in Chicago where he had become an influential lieutenant in the Colosimo mob. The rackets spawned by enactment of the Prohibition Amendment, illegal brewing, distilling and distribution of beer and liquor, were viewed as “growth industries.” Torrio, abetted by Al Capone, intended to take full advantage of opportunities. The mob also developed interests in legitimate businesses in the cleaning and dyeing field and cultivated influence with receptive public officials, labor unions, and employees’ associations. Al Capone ran Chicago's underworld successfully until two things took him out | Syphilis and taxes! Torrio soon succeeded to full leadership of the gang with the violent demise of Big Jim Colosimo, and Capone gained experience and expertise as his strong right arm. In 1925, Capone became boss when Torrio, seriously wounded in an assassination attempt, surrendered control and retired to Brooklyn. Capone had built a fearsome reputation in the ruthless gang rivalries of the period, struggling to acquire and retain “racketeering rights” to several areas of Chicago. That reputation grew as rival gangs were eliminated or nullified, and the suburb of Cicero became, in effect, a fiefdom of the Capone mob. The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre on February 14, 1929, might be regarded as the culminating violence of the Chicago gang era, as seven members or associates of the “Bugs” Moran mob were machine-gunned against a garage wall by rivals posing as police. The massacre was generally ascribed to the Capone mob, although Al himself was in Florida. ⏳𝐕𝐈𝐃𝐄𝐎 𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐏𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐒 ⏳ 00:00 – Intro 03:31 – Alphonse Gabriel Capone’s beginnings 07:20 - An introduction into a life of crime 18:01 – Big Jim Colosimo 22:00 – North Side Gang War 38:22 – Capone vs. Joseph Aiello 51:33 – St. Valentine’s Day Massacre 1:00:56 – Joseph Aiello’s Demise 1:02:52 – The downfall of Capone’s empire 🍁 𝐀𝐁𝐎𝐔𝐓 𝐃𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐚 🍁 Your source for the life and history of infamous gangsters ... and some other stuff, too.
